Habitat - Character Visual Concept

My buddy Charles Cox and a few people are working on a game called Habitat that I got the opportunity to do some look dev for. Really cool concept, where in the far future people are trying to survive in earth's orbit using only the trash and junk we tried to get rid of long before.

Tight deadline on this. I got to use Substance Designer for all the texture work. Renders are from Maya Viewport 2.0 using the default dx11 shader (love it!).  Would have loved to take this another 20% but working in my spare time I to move on to other things...bummer. Anyway check out Habitat's Kickstarter.

Skylanders Spyro prototype

Skylanders was one of the very last projects I worked on at Activision. In the shot, Spyro floated in as the toy and and then transformed into a living version of himself that you would then play in the game. The problem was that the toy version looked like less like the toy and more like Zoic's interpretation. I was asked to take the model from their cinematic (Below Left) and make it look more like the toy (Below right) at the beginning.

Below is the image what I was able to get in a few days, using Zbrush, and some mental ray magic fun.

They wound up not using the work I did because of the rendering overhead of IBL and Final Gather at the time was more than thy had time for, but whatever. This was still the sort of super fun challenge I don't usually get to do and I love me some Spyro. Feel free to message me if you like a breakdown of my workflow and/or you want to see a turn table of this little guy.

Here's a visual target I made for Prototype 2 a while back. I sculpted this from scratch and textured this using photographs they supplied me of an actress they had cast. In the image I've photoshopped a couple of things but it's mostly straight out of Mental Ray.

Just a FYI: This image looks rather dark on my Cintiq, but on my shiny new viewsonic looks about right.

Figure Sculpture Class

I began taking Scott Eaton's Class figure sculpting class a few weeks ago and I'm really liking it so far. I have to admit it's a ton of work but I'm trying my best to keep up. Between this, my Microsoft mentorships (yep plural, I have 2) and still seeing the family... life has been a bit nuts. I'll keep on posting this stuff as I go.

Head Study

For this exercise I took a head I had originally created for the the Russian Character below. I wanted try to take a "very" male head and make it female.

Lucia Von Bardas

This is another character I did a while back for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. I added a pose and did some additional modeling for her after the fact.

Sierra

This is a character I did awhile back for an art test. She didn't have a name, at least if she did I didn't know it. So I decided to call her Sierra. Don't know if she looks like a Sierra but I use to love their games :)

Gambit Turn Tables

Here's the final image of Gambit. Going to post some turn arounds and he'll be finished. Fun character to design but I'll be happy to move onto something else. Learned a lot with this one... Crits and comments are welcome, I'll put that energy to the next one ;)

Here's some turntables with and without the coat.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Finally got around to posting some of the characters I worked on for MUA2. I got to work on thsi project before and after I had a stint working on COD World at War. It was definitly the wonder bread of that project sandwich!

Special recognition goes out to David Duong who also worked on Spiderman with me. Dave has since went into design school in NY and is doing some pretty awesome stuff. Miss you Dave!

quick sketch

just for fun, no idea where this was heading.

Been awhile

Here's something I am currently workin' on... Textures all hand painted. I had planned to do a homage to Walter Bishop (John Noble) but because of some trademarking and blah blah I strayed a bit. I love that character soooooo much! I want to revisit the earlier version at some point and do a maquette with the whole body , but first gotta finish Remembering Omery!!! mmmmm priorities with my old men :-)

Just for fun

Just chillin' looking at some vfx make up work and got inspired to do a quick sketch. Did this in about 20 minutes. Now off to Remembering Omery...

Textureing update

Here's the latest update. It looks a little hot (lighting) on my 21 inch dell lcd but on my cintiq it looks good so... I'm hoping most lcds are around the same gamma settings as that screen. Anyway, still feel like I have more to do on the head, most of my time has been spent on the hair cards with more work needed on the hair line. I'll post the texture sheets at the very end.

Any feedback would be great!

Tank Girl Quick Sketch

Playing around with the idea of redesigning Tank Girl at some point so to get the juices flowing I did a quick sketch of the character in Zbrush. I added with some lighting and color in PS. Somewhat inspired by by Brian Bolland's illustrations.

Gun

Here's the gun for Mirslov. Again render in ZBrush using composite renders. Here's my main reference.

Mirslov

So this is another marketing piece I'm doing for work. Render was composited using all Zbrush renders using similar methods to this article on Zbrush Central.

Another practice sculpt

Doing this for the written part of my thesis. It's an example of a quick sketch started from a Zbrush sphere. Took about an hour to do.

3dCoat

So I've started playing with 3d coat.... pretty sweet. Hair in it is awesome. So the biggest challenges I've had with this particular sculpt is that at a certain point it becomes hard to smooth areas, and hard to control surfaces exactly how I want. I think the voxel volume gets way to thick at times causing everything to slow way down, so I need to figure out a way to control the thickness better. I think my gfx card also might be slowing me down quite a bit - no cuda.

Adding geo however is really simple, using either the snake object, primitives, or even the sphere voxel brush to add voxels to sculpt on. I think if you plan well (splitting up geo) you could easily get a full character done in here. I'm doing some more sculpts so keep an eye on the blog.

I found this while organizing my pictures and thought I'd post it. Anyway this was for a tutorial for work. Been really busy with Remembering Omery if you want to see what I'm up to just click the link to the right.

took a break

So i took a break for a sec to just sculpt a really quick head. I also took a cloth test I did for another character and adjusted it to fit the old guy - its alright...whatever. Anyway - RO will be have some updates soon too as soon as I get done with COD 5.
